KENYATTA: “KES 250M FOR POOR FAMILIES VIA MPESA”

ONLY 31 CASES, "BUT INFECTION IN THE COUNTRY ARE RISING"

It was Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta who yesterday updated the number of cases of Covid-19 virus positivity in the country during an official statement to the State House.
There are 31 new infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 1192.
Kenyatta did not provide many other details on the last day, except that all Saturday, May 23, the number of swabs carried out has risen to 57,650 and that once again, as in the last six days, there have been no deaths in the country, with the figure stopped at 50 deaths from Coronavirus, a sign that the cases of the last two weeks are all under control, also because nine times out of ten are controls on asymptomatic people.
Aside from optimism about the aggressiveness of the virus in Kenya at the present time, President Kenyatta
warned that cases of infection are set to increase and that the Government has taken additional measures to manage them.
"The rate of infection can increase if we do not comply with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health," said Kenyatta, "plus we know that many of our fellow citizens cannot feed their families or pay the rent, so we have allocated 30 billion shillings to vulnerable families.
These funds will be sent directly to families, 250 million per week, through Mpesa accounts, to bypass intermediaries and corruption, which has limited this kind of aid in the past.
"Money directly in the hands of a family restores dignity," said the Head of State, "because it gives people the power to make economic choices and not to stand in line and wait for food aid.
Among other things, Kenyatta announced a series of measures to restart the economy and to give work to young people in health care and public works. There will also be initiatives for education and for parents of students. In all the funds given for the emergency, including economic, health and community aid, will be almost 54 billion Kenyan shillings.
